Ceramix

On March 15th, I drove to Pittsburgh for the 52nd annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. I had the great pleasure to collaborate with ceramists Andrew Casto and Evan D'Orazio, as well as Engineering Professor Stephen Baek.

We collaborated for the exhibition What We Made Sounds Like This, which presented ceramic pieces with live sonification.

From my notebook

A core idea was to generate sounds from the negative space of the pieces. To this end, we inhabited the empty space around the 3D scanned pieces with 27 balls, which bounced around or inside the objects. The distance and position of each ball drove in real time a sound synthesis engine.

We took part to a panel presentation on March 16th: that was a great occasion to meet other artists, and we enjoyed the audience questions, which will likely lead to other creations & collaborations!

Max for Live: Extreme Time Stretching with Spectral Stretch

In this post, I'm giving insights into the creation of the Spectral Stretch Max for Live Device . There are many ways to achieve audio time stretching without transposition . Some time-based methods build on Pierre Schaefer 's Phonogène . Another approach consists in processing the sound in spectral domain, using a phase vocoder . In this case, the audio samples are converted to spectral data through a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Then, even if we focus on extreme time stretching, the details of the phase vocoder implementation have important consequences on the sound quality and the tool's flexibility for live usage. Composers, publish your scores!

Since I self-published my score Bleu 3 , a number of colleagues and friends asked me a " score self-publishing 101 " session. This post is intended to help anyone interested in self-publishing, especially composers. Some of these tips may be equally useful to make a book of your favorite recipes (a nice present for your friends). Actually, self-publishing is quite easy today, and you will surely find useful the article "Upload" from Make magazine, issue #12 . First of all, why self-publishing?
