Electronic Music Program @ Composit 2016 New Music Festival

The Composit New Music Festival opened tonight with a welcome aperitif at the Rive Gauche Café in Rieti. Tomorrow, the courses will start with guest composers Pierluigi Billone and Stefano Gervasoni, as well as with artistic director & composer Davide Ianni. I will be teaching the electronic music program - provisional schedule looks like this:

  • Tuesday July 5th
    10:00 – 13:30 Workshop 1 - Spectral Sound
    14:30 – 16:30 Improvisation session 1 + exploration of effects used in the composition Passage, for percussion & electronics
  • Wednesday July 6th
    10:00 – 13:30 Workshop 2 - Max, FFT & spectral sound processing, Jitter basics
    14:30 – 17:30 INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOP (Angèle Chemin, Soprano) or private lesson with J-F Charles
  • Thursday July 7th
    10:00 – 13:30 Workshop 3 - Vocoder & phase vocoder. Also, special guest Michele Zaccagnini presents Max, Processing, the brain, and more.
    14:30 – 17:30 INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOP (Strings, with the mdi ensamble) or private lesson with J-F Charles
  • Friday July 8th
    10:00 – 13:30 MASTERCLASS, Stefano Gervasoni and his compositional approach.
    14:30 – 17:30 Davide Ianni presents on his music with live electronics and on Beneath the music from a further room for double bass and singing bass drums.
  • Saturday July 9th
    10:00 – 13:30 Workshop 4 - Arduino & sensors
    14:30 – 17:30 Special guest Andrew Bentley, from the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, will share ideas about materials and techniques for sound theater, and how he uses Max in some of his pieces.
  • Sunday July 10th
    10:00 – 12:00 Workshop 5 - Max & the power of [poly~], presets & interpolation (no class after 12:00, time to set-up the concert recording)
  • Monday July 11th
    10:00 – 13:30 Improvisation session 2 – around the grand piano + using preset interpolations

In this post, I'm giving insights into the creation of the Spectral Stretch Max for Live Device . There are many ways to achieve audio time stretching without transposition . Some time-based methods build on Pierre Schaefer 's Phonogène . Another approach consists in processing the sound in spectral domain, using a phase vocoder . In this case, the audio samples are converted to spectral data through a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). A Free Tutorial on Spectral Sound Processing Using Max/MSP and Jitter

When I discovered electronic music during the Centre Acanthes 2000/Ircam , my favorite topic was real time sound processing in frequency domain. Hans Tutschku taught the wonders of AudioSculpt in Avignon, before Benjamin Thigpen taught Max/MSP in Helsinki. Now, the Computer Music Journal just published an article I wrote about spectral sound processing in real time and performance time ( whereas real-time treatments are applied on a live sound stream, performance-time treatments are transformations of sound files that are generated during a performance ). GroundSwell 2020 Emerging Composers Competition

Groundswell is a wonderful organization dedicated to the development of new music in Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba, Canada. I've been invited to serve as a member of the committee for their first electroacoustic music competition, along with composer Margaret Schedel and composer William Brunson . It's been a fun and quite interesting adventure. We listened to more than two dozen compositions.
