Ircam @ BU Center for New Music

A couple of days ago, I was talking with my friend composer Davide Ianni. He is currently very busy co-organizing this April 25-29 IRCAM residence at BUCNM, the Boston University Center for New Music. This event includes public lectures, demonstrations, a scientific conference, workshops, and two concerts at the ICA.

On April 28th, you'll hear classics:

  • Beat Furrer Gaspra and Aria
  • Tristan Murail L’esprit des dunes

On April 29th, the JACK quartet is performing:

  • Chaya Czernowin Hidden (US premiere)
  • Jonathan Harvey String Quartet No. 4

Among the workshops, composer Grégoire Lorieux will be presenting Orchids - Grégoire is one of the best connoisseurs of this computer assisted orchestration software; he used it in several of his compositions. Grégoire was in Brest during the Electrocution 2016 festival.

Max for Live: Extreme Time Stretching with Spectral Stretch

In this post, I'm giving insights into the creation of the Spectral Stretch Max for Live Device . There are many ways to achieve audio time stretching without transposition . Some time-based methods build on Pierre Schaefer 's Phonogène . Another approach consists in processing the sound in spectral domain, using a phase vocoder . In this case, the audio samples are converted to spectral data through a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Then, even if we focus on extreme time stretching, the details of the phase vocoder implementation have important consequences on the sound quality and the tool's flexibility for live usage. Freeze a sound with Max/MSP/Jitter

In April 2008, I was invited by composers Eric Chasalow and Maxwell Dulaney to give a 2-day seminar on spectral sound processing techniques at Brandeis University Music Department . A topic the music students particularly enjoyed was the frozen sound , the audio equivalent of the cinematic " freeze frame shot ". I taught the nuts and bold of the real-time stochastic spectral freeze technique (the stochastic component is aimed at breaking the ice - with the audience).
